Strohm Jr., Dr. Walter William, age 89, of Franklin, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2020 at Hospice of Butler and Warren Counties. He was born June 11, 1930 in Bristow, OK to Walter and Marie (Wenger) Strohm. He served our country during the Korean War in the US Army and received an honorable discharge. Following military service, he went on to earn a PhD in nuclear physics from The University of Kansas. His career included work as a nuclear safeguards specialist at Mound Laboratories in Miamisburg, OH, as well as an appointment with the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria. He spent the latter part of his career in Albuquerque, NM, as part of the development team teaching courses on Nuclear Materials Control and Accountability. He was a Senior member of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management. Walter attended First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Middletown. He was a model train enthusiast for many years, and also enjoyed bird watching in his back yard. Walter is survived by his wife, Lois (Poynter) Strohm; daughter, Heather (Matthew) Lyons; grandchildren, Renee Lyons, Owen Lyons; sister, Shirley Willaby of MO; Sister-in-Law Linda Poynter; Niece, Elizabeth (Gil) Benson; Nephew, John W. Poynter; and numerous extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Mike Willaby; Brother-in-Law, Bill G. Poynter. A Receiving of Friends will be held Thursday, January 9, 2020 from 11:00-1:00 pm at Baker-Stevens-Parramore Funeral Home, 6850 Roosevelt Avenue, Middletown, OH 45005. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 1:00 pm at the funeral home with The Rev. Dr. William Barnes-Jackson officiating. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.bakerstevensparramore.com.
